World leaders call for the COVID-19 vaccine to be a common good
.
More than 100 personalities among former presidents, world leaders, Nobel laureates, social activists and artists sign a petition to make the COVID-19 vaccine a global common good, free of any patent rights.
.
Rosalía Arteaga is part of this global petition, with her signature as the former president of Ecuador. Rigoberta Menchú, 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner; actor and producer George Clooney; Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico; the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mohamed el Baradei, and others.
.
This call calls for transparency in the creation of the vaccine and that “the information issued by the private sector, scientists and authorities must be timely, accurate, clear, complete and transparent. The results of the investigation must be in the public domain ”.
.
World leaders point out that the World Health Organization should design a Global Plan of Action on the vaccine, with a committee in charge of monitoring research and ensuring equal access for all countries.
.
An excerpt from the petition mentions: “We call on governments, foundations, charities, philanthropic individuals, and social enterprises (that is, businesses that are created to solve people's problems without getting any personal benefit from them) to that produce and / or distribute vaccines all over the world ”.
